Georgia Tech’s Office of Undergraduate Admission (OUA) is excited to announce a new advising partnership with Matriculate, a free near-peer college advising program dedicated to helping talented students from limited-income backgrounds navigate the path to college.
This partnership will continue expanding access to a Tech education by adding a network of current Tech students to the pool of undergraduates nationwide who specialize in assisting prospective university students in their college search journey.
“Navigating high school, staying engaged in academics, and preparing for the next phase of life can be overwhelming. When you add limited resources to understand the college application process, the gap between students and higher education grows even wider,” said Christina Scott, assistant director of rural initiatives for OUA. “That’s where this partnership comes in, creating a transformative support system for students. I’ve seen firsthand how critical this support is, and I’m excited to see the impact of this partnership.”
Matriculate has supported over 17,000 high school students across the country and trained more than 4,500 undergraduate students to serve as advisors. The state of Georgia is currently the fifth largest student population by state served by Matriculate.
This advising partnership between OUA and Matriculate ensures that the next generation of high-achieving students can find mentors at the Institute and learn more about the opportunities Tech has to offer all students.
“Georgia Tech greatly expands our advising reach across the state of Georgia,” said Andrew Moe Hoffman, senior director of college partnerships at Matriculate. “Public education options are critical to our students’ college search process, and we’re excited to welcome Georgia Tech into our college partnership portfolio.”
Tech currently has 39 undergraduate students whose mentorship from Matriculate helped them successfully navigate the transition to college.
Jessica Rhee, Matriculate High School Fellow ’24 and Georgia Tech’ 28, shared, “As someone who benefitted so much from Matriculate, I know firsthand how powerful this kind of near-peer advising can be. Bringing the program to Georgia Tech in person creates more opportunities for students here to give back and help high schoolers navigate the college process, especially those who might not otherwise have access to guidance. I’m proud to see Georgia Tech partnering with Matriculate and look forward to seeing the community grow on campus.”
“Reflecting on my experience with my Matriculate advisor,” stated Nathaniel Wallace, Matriculate High School Fellow ’23 and Georgia Tech ’27, “I’d say that having a college student as a mentor made the process feel more relatable and approachable. [My advisor] Vineela understood what I was going through and gave me personalized advice based on her own experiences. The expansion of Matriculate’s advising programs at Tech means more students from backgrounds like mine will have the opportunity to access this invaluable support and further higher education, and I’m thrilled that Georgia Tech students like myself will have the chance to give back and make a meaningful impact on the lives of prospective college students.”
Matriculate will begin recruiting current Tech students to join as virtual advisor fellows this fall, when they’ll begin training to serve Tech’s 2028 first-year class. Those interested in becoming advisors should visit Matriculate’s website.
